{"id":180,"date":"2014-09-25T10:57:25","date_gmt":"2014-09-25T10:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mocoedblog.org\/?p=180"},"modified":"2014-09-25T10:57:25","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T10:57:25","slug":"candidate-forum-evaluating-educators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mocoedblog.org\/?p=180","title":{"rendered":"Candidate Forum: Evaluating Educators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Evaluating Educators.<\/strong> MCPS has gone its own way in Maryland on teacher evaluation.\u00a0 It did not participate in the Race to the Top (RttT) grant that would have given MCPS funds in exchange for implementing a test-based teacher evaluation system.\u00a0 Now, the state superintendent may require MCPS to adopt MSDE\u2019s requirement that 50% of a teachers\u2019 evaluation be determined by test scores. Would you support MCPS standing its ground or should it become more aligned with the state\u2019s approach?\u00a0 Would you support the new proposal in MCPS to have student, teacher and principal feedback as part of teacher, principal and associate superintendent evaluation, respectively?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Response:<\/strong> I do not support using student test scores as a percentage of teachers\u2019 evaluations.\u00a0 Too many factors play a role for student test scores to be a valid indicator of a teacher\u2019s performance.\u00a0 That said, principals should review test scores with teachers to identify trends, set goals, etc.\u00a0 Test scores are a tool for understanding what our students have learned; they do not necessarily indicate what our teachers have taught.<\/p>\n<p>For years I have supported student surveys to provide \u201ccustomer\u201d feedback to teachers.\u00a0 Students are able to identify effective teachers, especially when the right survey instruments are used. \u00a0To take it a step further, 360 degree assessments should be embraced by MCPS as well.\u00a0 These 360 degree assessments (which include peer as well as student and principal evaluations) are easily administered and valuable to staff members and their supervisors. \u00a0It is critical to have this type of data when evaluating teachers and ALL administrators within MCPS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Evaluating Educators.
